Marcella Ann Ng, born on July 24, 1956, is widely recognized as the first African American woman pilot in the United States Armed Forces. Her life and accomplishments continue to inspire and pave the way for future generations of women in aviation.
Marcella was born as Marcella Ann Hayes in Mexico, Missouri in 1956. She was raised by her grandparents in Centralia, Missouri, where she experienced a nurturing and supportive environment that would shape her aspirations and determination. After completing her education at Hickman High School in Columbia, Missouri in 1974, Marcella went on to pursue a higher education at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
Despite initially contemplating a career in medicine, Marcella discovered her passion for aviation during her time at university. This newfound passion led her to join the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) during her second semester of college. Following her graduation in 1978, she made the bold decision to enlist in the United States Army.
On November 27, 1979, at the U.S. Army Aviation Center located in Fort Rucker, Alabama, Marcella Ng etched her name into history. She became the first black woman, and the 55th woman overall, to earn her pilot’s wings in the United States Armed Forces. This groundbreaking achievement marked a significant milestone not just for Marcella but also for women and minority communities across the nation. Marcella’s unwavering determination and dedication paved the way for more diversity and inclusion in the armed forces.
Marcella’s military career spanned an impressive 22 years, during which she served with honor and distinction. Rising through the ranks, she eventually retired as a lieutenant colonel in the year 2000. Throughout her service, Marcella’s expertise and leadership were invaluable to the United States Armed Forces.
