Vijaya Lakshmi Melnick, born on 19 November 1937 in Calicut, Kerala, India, is an India-born American academic and researcher who has made significant contributions in the fields of biological and environmental sciences and immunology. She is renowned for her expertise and passion for health and education. Melnick’s career has spanned various prestigious academic institutions and organizations, leaving a lasting impact on the scientific community and society as a whole.
Melnick’s educational journey began at a girls’ school run by Franciscan nuns, where she received an English medium school education. Her thirst for knowledge led her to attend a girls’ college and later an Agricultural College. It was during her senior year at the Agricultural College that Melnick’s exceptional academic prowess earned her an International Peace Scholarship to pursue her studies in the United States. She eagerly enrolled at the University of Wisconsin, where she obtained her Master’s and doctoral degrees. Melnick also undertook postdoctoral training in cell biology at the same institution.
