Debra Kolodny is a prominent figure in the fields of bisexual rights activism and congregational rabbinic ministry. Throughout their life, Kolodny has played a crucial role in advocating for the rights and acceptance of bisexual individuals within religious communities. Their relentless dedication to social justice and their pioneering work have made a lasting impact on both the LGBTQ+ community and religious organizations.
Born and raised in the United States, Debra Kolodny has always exhibited a strong commitment to her beliefs. In 1984, they courageously came out as bisexual, paving the way for countless individuals who were struggling with their own sexual orientation. Kolodny’s openness about their bisexuality in the context of their rabbinic ministry challenged societal norms and shattered stereotypes.
Kolodny’s contributions to the intersectionality of faith and bisexuality extend far beyond their personal journey. In 2000, they edited the groundbreaking anthology Blessed Bi Spirit, the first of its kind to be written entirely by bisexual people of faith. Kolodny’s own piece, Hear, I Pray You, This Dream Which I Have Dreamed, delves into the complex relationship between Jewish identity and bisexuality, offering a unique perspective on the subject.
In addition to their work as an author and editor, Debra Kolodny has held significant leadership positions within various organizations. They served as the National Coordinator of BiNet USA for five years, advocating for the rights and visibility of the bisexual community on a national scale. Kolodny also facilitated the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force’s National Religious Leadership Roundtable from 1998 to 2004, bridging the gap between religious institutions and the LGBTQ+ community.

In 2011, Debra Kolodny joined Pnai Or, a Jewish Renewal congregation located in Portland, Oregon, as its rabbi. Prior to this, they served as the executive director of ALEPH: Alliance for Jewish Renewal for nine years, where they left an indelible mark on the organization’s efforts in revitalizing Jewish spirituality. Kolodny’s influence also extended to the northern Virginia community of Shoreshim, where they actively served for four years.
