Biography:
Donna P. Davis is an American physician who made history as the first African-American woman to serve as a medical doctor in the United States Navy. Born and raised in New York City, Davis displayed a passion for medicine from a young age. She pursued her education at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where she excelled academically and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
After completing her undergraduate studies, Davis enrolled at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. She proved to be an exceptional student, earning numerous accolades during her time there. She was awarded the prestigious Bache Scholarship, the Leopold Schapp Foundation Award, and the C.V. Mosby Award in Medicine, among others. Her dedication to excellence was further recognized when she was granted the American Association Medical College Fellowship in 1972.
In 1973, Davis achieved her lifelong dream of becoming a physician when she earned her doctorate in medicine. She then embarked on an internship at Harlem Hospital in New York City, where she gained invaluable experience in both physical and psychiatric care. This immersive training prepared her for the challenges she would face as a medical professional in various settings.
The year 1975 marked a significant milestone in Davis’s career as she made history by becoming the first African-American woman to join the United States Navy as a medical doctor. On April 25, she was commissioned as a lieutenant at the Navy Recruiting District in Jacksonville, Florida. Davis’s groundbreaking achievement shattered barriers and paved the way for future generations of African-American women in the military.
Her first assignment led her to the Oakland Navy Hospital in California, where she provided medical care and support to service members. During her time there, Davis met her husband, James Hammel, who was also serving active duty. The couple eventually moved to Southern California and went on to have two sons, Grant and Damien.
After leaving active duty, Davis pursued her passion for medicine by opening her own clinic in Yorba Linda, California. She continues to practice medicine to this day, providing compassionate care to her patients. Throughout her career, Davis has remained committed to breaking down barriers and inspiring others with her trailblazing achievements.
