Zohra Mumtaz Sehgal was an Indian actress, dancer, and choreographer, who left an indelible mark on the Indian film industry and paved the way for future generations. Born on April 27, 1912, in Saharanpur, United Provinces, British India, she was the third of seven children. Raised in a traditional Muslim household in Chakrata, present-day Uttarakhand, Zohra Sehgal had a lively and adventurous spirit from an early age. Despite losing vision in her left eye due to glaucoma, she remained determined and fearless.
Zohra Sehgal’s passion for performing arts emerged early on, and she began her career as a member of a contemporary dance troupe. However, her true calling was acting, which she pursued in the 1940s. Over the span of six decades, she appeared in numerous British films, television shows, and Bollywood productions, becoming one of the most celebrated actresses of her time.
Some of Sehgal’s most notable films include Neecha Nagar, Afsar (1946), Bhaji on the Beach (1992), The Mystic Masseur (2001), Bend It Like Beckham (2002), Dil Se..
