Valerie Still (born 1961) is an American former professional women’s basketball player with the Washington Mystics of the WNBA and the Columbus Quest of the American Basketball League (ABL). During her four years at the University of Kentucky, she scored more points than any other basketball player, male or female, with 2,763 points.
After her successful college career at Kentucky, Still took her basketball talents abroad, playing in Italy for 12 years. She joined the Famila Schio team and became a dominant force in the Italian basketball scene. During her time in Italy, Still earned an Italian Professional Basketball Championship, showcasing her prowess as a player and her ability to adapt and succeed in a new environment.
In 1996, Still returned to the United States and was drafted by the Columbus Quest of the fledgling ABL. She made an immediate impact, leading the Quest to back-to-back championships in 1997 and 1998. Her exceptional performance on the court earned her the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in both championship series. Still’s leadership and skills were instrumental in establishing the Quest as a powerhouse team in the ABL.
When the ABL folded during its third season, Still transitioned to the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and joined the Washington Mystics. As a member of the Mystics, she continued to showcase her skills and contribute to the team’s success.
Off the court, Still’s personal life also received media attention. In 1995, she married Rob Lock, who was also a former University of Kentucky basketball player. They met while Still was conducting an interview with Darryl Dawkins, Lock’s teammate, for her television program in Italy. The couple welcomed a son named Aaron Lock in 1996. However, they ultimately divorced in 2007.
Still’s contributions to women’s basketball have left a lasting impact on the sport.
