Sofia Stanislavovna Pozdniakova was born on June 17, 1997, in Novosibirsk, Russia. She is a Russian right-handed sabre fencer known for her exceptional skills and numerous achievements in the sport. Pozdniakova has made significant contributions to women’s fencing and has left an indelible mark on the history of the sport.
Coming from a family deeply involved in fencing, Pozdniakova grew up with a natural affinity for the sport. Her father, Stanislav Pozdnyakov, is a legendary figure in sabre fencing, with four Olympic gold medals, ten World Championships titles, and thirteen European Championship titles to his name. Her mother, Anastasia, also had a successful fencing career and is currently the secretary at the Fencing Federation of the Novosibirsk Oblast.
At the age of ten, Sofia made the decision to follow in her parents’ footsteps by dedicating herself to sabre fencing. This meant leaving behind her other sporting interests, such as swimming and acrobatic gymnastics. Under the guidance of her coach, Sergey Stepankin at the Fencing Center in Novosibirsk, Pozdniakova honed her skills and developed into a formidable fencer.
