Biography:
Rumana Monzur is an assistant professor at Dhaka University, a Fulbright scholar, and a graduate student in political science from the University of British Columbia. Born in Bangladesh, she has become a symbol of resilience and strength in the face of adversity.
In June 2011, Rumana’s life took an unimaginable turn when she was brutally attacked and blinded by her husband, Hasan Sayeed Sumon, during a visit to her home country. The reason behind this heinous act was Rumana’s desire to pursue higher education in Canada against her husband’s wishes. In an attempt to justify his actions to the Bangladeshi media, Sumon falsely accused Rumana of infidelity. This incident shone a spotlight on the ongoing issue of domestic violence against women in Bangladesh and the violation of their fundamental rights.
Despite the traumatic experience and the bleak prognosis for her eyesight, Rumana did not let this setback deter her. She returned to Vancouver in July 2011 for further medical treatment, but unfortunately, the surgeries were unsuccessful, leaving her with little hope of ever seeing again. This adversity only fueled her determination to overcome the challenges that lay ahead.
Undeterred by her circumstances, Rumana continued her studies, and in 2017, she achieved a remarkable milestone by receiving a degree in law from the University of British Columbia, Canada. Her perseverance and dedication to her education are a testament to her indomitable spirit.
Today, Rumana plays a significant role in inspiring others and raising awareness about domestic violence and gender inequality. Her story has touched the hearts of people around the world, highlighting the need for greater support and protection for women facing such atrocities. She has become an advocate for women’s rights, using her own experience to bring about positive change.
