Born in Los Angeles and raised in rural Southern California, Roberta Heuer developed a profound love for storytelling from an early age. As a shy child with a vibrant imagination, she often entertained her family with fairy-tale adventure stories that she would craft to captivate their imaginations. After her father’s connections facilitated her job as a clerk at the Los Angeles County Welfare Department, Roberta continued to pursue her passion for computers and programming.
During her teenage years, Roberta met Ken Williams and the two of them began dating. In late 1972, just a few days after Ken’s eighteenth birthday, Roberta married him. They welcomed their first son into the world in November 1973 and briefly moved to Illinois, where Roberta worked as a computer operator. However, they ultimately returned to Los Angeles, where Roberta secured a position as a computer programmer at Lawry’s Foods, utilizing COBOL in her work. By 1979, the couple had two children, and Ken worked as a computer programmer and consultant on IBM mainframe machines.
In the late 1970s, Roberta’s passion for storytelling and gaming merged when she created her first game, Mystery House, in 1980. This text-based adventure game became a modest commercial success and is hailed as the first graphic adventure game in history. The game’s innovative use of graphics and interactive storytelling laid the foundation for the genre.
Roberta went on to create the iconic King’s Quest series, which became her most significant achievement. The series featured groundbreaking elements such as rich narratives, interactive environments, and puzzle-solving gameplay. With each installment, Roberta continued to push the boundaries of what was possible in video game storytelling and design, captivating players and making a lasting impact on the industry.
In 1995, Roberta released Phantasmagoria, a groundbreaking full-motion video game that blended live-action scenes with interactive gameplay. The game pushed the boundaries of storytelling in gaming and became a commercial success, further solidifying Roberta’s role as a pioneering game designer.
However, in 1996, Sierra On-Line faced upheaval when it was acquired by CUC International. Layoffs and management changes followed, leaving Roberta dissatisfied with the company’s direction. After a brief sabbatical, she returned to Sierra in a game design role but grew increasingly frustrated with CUC’s decision-making process. Following the release of King’s Quest: Mask of Eternity in 1998, Roberta decided to leave the game industry in 1999.
Retirement led Roberta to pursue her passion for traveling and writing historical fiction. In 2021, she released her historical novel, Farewell to Tara, showcasing her talent for storytelling beyond the realm of gaming. However, her love for game development never waned. In 2023, she made a triumphant return to the industry with the 3D remake of the classic adventure game Colossal Cave Adventure, released as Colossal Cave.
