Rita Simonton, born in the 1920s, was an accomplished swimmer and a prominent figure in the world of masters swimming. She had a passion for swimming that began in her early years when she learned to swim with water wings in a brook in Connecticut. Encouraged by her father, she continuously challenged herself to swim further and improve her skills. Rita’s dedication to the sport led her to compete in the New England AAU club competitions, although she struggled to make a breakthrough in the junior division.
Following her marriage, Rita took a break from swimming to focus on raising her children and worked as a bookkeeper. However, her love for swimming remained undiminished. In 1966, she relocated to Huntington Beach and became a member of Sally Dillon’s Long Beach Masters team, where she swam regularly. It wasn’t until 1972 that she participated in her first meet, marking the beginning of her remarkable journey in masters swimming.
In 1976, Rita discovered Golden West College in Huntington Beach, where swimming classes offered coaching. She seized the opportunity and has been associated with the college ever since.
