Biography:
Rita Horky, a former women’s basketball player and coach, hails from Blissfield, Michigan. Throughout her remarkable career, Horky left an indelible mark on the world of women’s basketball, earning accolades, breaking barriers, and inspiring generations to come.
Horky’s basketball journey began at Nashville Business College, where she showcased her exceptional talent and passion for the sport. After her time at Nashville, she joined the Iowa Wesleyan College Tigerettes, an AAU team, in 1959 and 1960. Standing tall at 5 foot 11 inches, Horky proved to be an invaluable asset as a guard, consistently impressing both teammates and opponents alike.
Known for her unparalleled skills, Horky was named AAU All-American an astounding five times. Her exceptional scoring ability and contribution to her team’s success did not go unnoticed. Horky’s outstanding performances led her to Pan American gold medals in 1959 and 1963, underlining her undeniable impact on the international stage. In 1959, she emerged as the USA’s leading scorer, averaging an impressive 11.9 points per game. Four years later, in 1963, she ranked as the team’s third leading scorer, with an average of 7.7 points per game.
Horky’s presence was felt at the World Championship as well. In 1964, her team finished in an admirable 4th place, further solidifying Horky’s status as a force to be reckoned with. In 1967, despite an 11th place finish, Horky once again exhibited her remarkable skills on an international stage.
Beyond her outstanding playing career, Horky also ventured into coaching. In 1982-83, she took on the role of head coach for the Northern Illinois women’s basketball team. Horky’s leadership and coaching prowess resulted in a respectable 13-14 record, showcasing her ability to inspire and guide aspiring athletes.
Rita Horky’s success and achievements have rightfully earned her a place among the legends of women’s basketball. In 2000, she was honored with induction into the prestigious Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, located in Knoxville, Tennessee.
