Biography:
Reshma Pathan, also known as the Sholay Girl, is an Indian actress and the first stuntwoman in the Indian film industry. She has left an indelible mark on the world of entertainment and has paved the way for future generations of female stunt artists. Reshma’s extraordinary career and countless daring feats have earned her the well-deserved title of the pioneer of stuntwomen in India.
Reshma’s journey as a stuntwoman began at the tender age of 14 when the renowned Fight Director S. Azim recognized her potential and offered her a chance to join the film industry. Her first assignment was as a stunt double for Laxmi Chaya in the film Ek Khiladi Bawan Patte (1972). Despite the modest remuneration of 175 rupees per day, with only 100 rupees in hand due to transport expenses, Reshma was content. Supporting her family’s needs took priority over personal gain.
Throughout her illustrious career, Reshma has fearlessly performed dangerous stunts in almost 400 films. She has been the trusted stunt double for some of the most iconic leading ladies of Bollywood, including Waheeda Rehman, Rekha, Hema Malini, Sridevi, Dimple Kapadia, and Meenakshi Sheshadri. Her versatility extended beyond Hindi films, as she also showcased her skills in Bhojpuri and South Indian films, as well as bilingual projects like Gandhi, Mangal Pandey, and The Warrior.
Reshma’s remarkable achievements have not gone unnoticed. She holds the distinction of being the first female member of the Movie Stunt Artists Association, a testament to her groundbreaking contributions to the industry. Her relentless dedication to her craft and bold approach to performing stunts have inspired countless aspiring stuntwomen.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Reshma’s personal life is also a testament to her resilience and determination. Initially, her father vehemently opposed her choice to pursue a career in stunts, fearing the inherent risks involved. However, with time and persuasion, she managed to convince her family and embark on her remarkable journey.
In the 1980s, Reshma married stunt director Shakoor Pathan. The couple faced significant financial challenges when a law banning stunts in films was passed in 1984. At one point, their desperation led Reshma to search every nook and cranny of their house for loose change, hoping to find enough money to provide their next meal. Ultimately, they weathered the storm and placed great emphasis on the education and stable employment of their sister’s sons, whom Reshma raised, and their own son, who became a doctor.
Reshma Pathan’s contribution to the film industry goes beyond her awe-inspiring stunts. She has been a vocal advocate for addressing sexism in Indian cinema and pushing for equal opportunities for women in all aspects of the entertainment world. Her name has become synonymous with bravery, determination, and a relentless pursuit of breaking barriers.
