Biography:
Patricia Trish Roberts (born June 14, 1955) is an American basketball coach and former player. She has left an indelible mark on the sport through her achievements and contributions as both a player and a coach.
Roberts’ basketball journey began in Monroe, Georgia, where she honed her skills at Monroe Area High School. Her talent on the court was evident at an early age, and she continued to excel in the sport throughout her career. After high school, Roberts embarked on her college playing career at North Georgia State College during the 1973–1974 season. Her passion and dedication to the sport were apparent, and she soon transferred to Emporia State College in Kansas, where she played collegiate basketball from 1974 to 1976.
In 1976, Roberts had the honor of representing the United States as a member of the women’s basketball team at the 1976 Summer Olympics. This was a historic moment for women’s basketball, as it marked the first time the sport was included in the Olympic Games. Despite a loss to Japan in their inaugural game, Roberts stood out as the team’s second-highest scorer, contributing 14 points. The American team rebounded and went on to win the silver medal, with Roberts playing a pivotal role in the final game, scoring 10 points.
Roberts’ success as a player extended beyond the Olympics. She also made her mark in college basketball, particularly during her time at the University of Tennessee. Roberts holds impressive records for the Lady Volunteers, including the most points scored in a season (929) and the most points scored in a single game (51). Her athleticism and skill on the court made her a formidable competitor and a vital asset to her teams.
After her playing career, Roberts transitioned into coaching, bringing her wealth of knowledge and experience to the next generation of athletes. She held head coaching positions at various institutions, including the University of Maine from 1988 to 1992, the University of Michigan from 1992 to 1996, Atlanta Glory in 1996-1997, Stony Brook University from 1999 to 2004, and Agnes Scott College from 2011 to 2016. Roberts’ leadership, strategic acumen, and commitment to player development enabled her teams to achieve great success on and off the court.
Throughout her career, Roberts has been widely recognized for her remarkable contributions to women’s basketball. She has been inducted into prestigious halls of fame, including the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, the Tennessee Lady Volunteer Hall of Fame, the Emporia State College Hall of Fame, and the Women In Sports and Education Hall of Fame.
