Ouma Laouali is a trailblazing Nigerien pilot who made history as the first woman to serve as a pilot in her country. Born in Niger, Laouali developed a passion for aviation at a young age and dedicated herself to breaking gender barriers in the field.
In October 2015, at the age of 28, Laouali achieved her dream and became the first woman pilot in Niger. This remarkable accomplishment not only marked a significant milestone for women in aviation but also showcased the country’s commitment to gender equality and progress. Laouali’s journey to becoming a pilot was part of a larger initiative by the Nigerien air force to combat Boko Haram, an Islamist terrorist group active in the region.

In a ceremony held in Niger’s capital city, Niamey, the United States donated two Cessna airplanes worth $24 million to Niger.
