Nancy Marie Lopez is an American former professional golfer who made a significant impact on the sport during her career. Born on January 6, 1957, in Torrance, California, Lopez’s journey to become one of the greatest figures in women’s golf started at a young age.
Lopez’s talent and passion for golf became evident early on. At the age of 12 in 1969, she won the New Mexico Women’s Amateur, giving a glimpse of the success that would follow. She continued to dominate the amateur scene, winning the U.S. Girls’ Junior championships in 1972 and 1974, at the ages of 15 and 17, respectively. These victories showcased her exceptional skills and potential.
After graduating from Goddard High School in Roswell, New Mexico, Lopez made her mark in the professional golfing world. Despite being an amateur, she played in the U.S. Women’s Open in both 1974 and 1975, finishing tied for second. Her performance attracted attention and set the stage for her professional debut.
In 1976, Lopez enrolled at the University of Tulsa, where she continued to excel in golf. As a freshman, she was named All-American and Female Athlete of the Year. She further solidified her position in the golfing world by winning the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) national intercollegiate golf championship. Additionally, she represented the U.S. in the Curtis Cup and World Amateur teams, fully establishing herself as a rising star.
