Mikaela Pauline Shiffrin was born on March 13, 1995, in Vail, Colorado. She comes from a skiing family, being the second child of Eileen and Jeff Shiffrin, both former ski racers. Her father, Jeff, grew up in New Jersey and raced for Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, while her mother, Eileen, raced in high school in Massachusetts. Mikaela’s older brother, Taylor, also participated in ski racing for the University of Denver.
From an early age, Mikaela showed great potential and achieved impressive results in major competitions. At just 14 years old, in March 2010, she won both the slalom and giant slalom events at the Topolino Games in Italy, competing against skiers from 40 different nations. The following winter, meeting the FIS minimum age requirement of 15, she won a Nor-Am Cup super combined race in Panorama, British Columbia. This marked only her eighth FIS-level race. Shiffrin continued to excel, earning podium finishes in her next three Nor-Am races.
In January 2011, she made her World Cup debut in the slalom event at Lienz, Austria, finishing 32nd. Later that month, Shiffrin became the youngest American to win a World Cup race in over 30 years when she claimed victory in the slalom event at Are, Sweden, at the age of 16 years and 9 months.
