Maurine Kornfeld, a remarkable figure in the world of swimming, is an embodiment of determination, passion, and resilience. Born and raised in Great Falls, Montana, Kornfeld’s love for the water started at an early age. However, it wasn’t until she reached her sixties that she truly embraced swimming and embarked on a Masters Swimming journey that would redefine her life.
After retiring from her successful career as a social worker, Kornfeld found solace in the waters of the Glendale, California YMCA. It was here that she joined the Masters team, immersing herself in the sport and learning not just the techniques but also the language of swimming. Her commitment went beyond the pool as she pursued various Red Cross courses, including Water Safety Instructor, Advanced Lifesaving, and Adapted Aquatics. Kornfeld’s dedication paid off, and at the age of 90, she set her first Masters World Record in the 65-69 age group.
Kornfeld’s achievements only continued to grow as she defied age norms and shattered records. In 2018, she received the honor of being inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) as a Masters Honoree, recognizing her significant contributions to the sport. Her presence at the 2017 FINA Masters World Championships in Budapest left the crowd astounded as she became the oldest female swimmer and set a new World Record in the 95-99 age group for the 800m freestyle.

In 2023, at the United States Masters Swimming (USMS) Spring Championships in Irvine, California, she made headlines once again by breaking the Masters World Record in the 50 freestyle for the 100-104 age group.
