Biography:
Marium Mukhtiar (May 19, 1992 – November 24, 2015) was a Pakistani fighter pilot. She was born into a Sindhi Sheikh family in Karachi, Pakistan, with her father Colonel Ahmed Mukhtiar being her biggest inspiration. Marium studied at the Mehran Model School and College in Pano Akil followed by Army Public School and College (APSACS) in Malir Cantt, Karachi for her intermediate education.
Marium had a passion for sports and played football for Balochistan United in the National Women Football Championship. However, her true calling was aviation. In pursuit of her dreams, she studied civil engineering at NED University before successfully qualifying as a fighter pilot in the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) in 2014. Marium was one of seven women in her batch to achieve this remarkable feat, breaking gender barriers and paving the way for future generations of female pilots.
Apart from her commitment to her military career, Marium was also actively involved in charity work. She dedicated her time to supporting a school for underprivileged children who couldn’t afford an education. Her kindness and selflessness was an inspiration to many.
Tragically, on November 24, 2015, Marium Mukhtiar’s life was cut short while serving in the line of duty. She and squadron leader Saqib Abbasi were on a routine training mission when their FT-7PG aircraft crashed near Kundian, Mianwali, Punjab. Both pilots ejected from the cockpit, but Marium succumbed to her injuries later at a military hospital. It was determined that they had ejected at too low an altitude, with Abbasi managing to eject seconds earlier, possibly saving his life.
Marium Mukhtiar’s death was declared a martyrdom by the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) due to her dedication and bravery in handling the emergency situation until the very end. The PAF acknowledged that she could have saved her life by ejecting before entering populous areas, but she chose to fly the falling jet alongside her co-pilot. Marium was buried with honors at the Malir Cantonment Graveyard.
