Lynn Joyce Roethke (born June 22, 1961) is an American female judoka competitor. She is widely recognized for her remarkable achievements in the field of judo, being a two-time Olympic athlete, a Pan American gold medalist, and World Champion Silver medalist. Lynn’s dedication and skill have made her an influential figure in the world of women’s sports.
Lynn’s journey in judo began in the early 1980s when she started competing in the −61 kg division. Her talent quickly caught the attention of the judo community, and she continued to rise through the ranks with determination and hard work.
One of Lynn’s most significant accomplishments came in 1988 when she competed in the Summer Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea. She made history by becoming the first American woman to reach the finals in the -61 kg (134 lbs) division. Although she earned a silver medal, she solidified her place as a trailblazer for future female judoka. It is important to note that during these Olympics, women’s judo was a demonstration sport and did not count towards the USA’s total medal count. Lynn’s performance was remarkable and laid the foundation for future American female athletes in judo.
