Karen Shepard (born November 12, 1961) is an American actress, martial artist, and keynote speaker who has left an indelible mark on the world of film, theater, and television. Her groundbreaking achievements as a martial artist and her subsequent success as an action film star have solidified her place as a legend and pioneer in the world of martial arts.
In 1979, Shepard made history by becoming the first woman to hold the title of #1 Women’s Black Belt Forms Champion for the Karate Illustrated ratings. She went on to retain this title for a second consecutive year in 1980. This remarkable accomplishment not only showcased her exceptional skills as a martial artist but also marked the beginning of a career that would revolutionize the representation of female martial artists in the industry.
Following her reign as the #1 Women’s Black Belt Forms Champion, Shepard was offered a starring role in the film The Shinobi Ninja by Tadashi Yamashita. Accepting this offer, she became the first American female martial artist to transition from competition to becoming an action film star. The success of The Shinobi Ninja further solidified her place in cinematic history and opened doors for female martial artists in the industry.
After filming in Japan, Shepard decided to pursue her passion for acting and relocated to Los Angeles, California. She starred in several notable films, including Cyborg 2 alongside Angelina Jolie and Jack Palance, Righting Wrongs (also known as Above the Law) with Cynthia Rothrock, and America 3000. Her diverse range of roles showcased her versatility as an actress and established her as a prominent figure in the entertainment industry.
In addition to her success in film, Shepard also made a significant impact on television. Her portrayal of The Enforcer on the popular show Hercules: The Legendary Journeys garnered widespread acclaim and received the highest ratings for the entire series. The fight scenes between Shepard’s character and Hercules were hailed as some of the best in the show’s history, further cementing her status as a formidable actress.
Beyond her achievements in the world of entertainment, Shepard has made substantial contributions to the martial arts community. As the first woman to be officially rated #1 World Karate Champion in forms, she broke barriers and paved the way for other female martial artists to compete at the highest level. Recognizing the lack of ratings for women in martial arts Forms/Kata competition, Shepard took it upon herself to advocate for change.
She organized a meeting with Renardo Barden, the editor of Karate Illustrated, the only existing ratings system for martial artists at the time. Together, they worked to establish separate forms divisions for female competitors and to create the first official ratings for female martial artists. Her efforts were successful, and Shepard’s goal of drawing more women to compete in martial arts tournaments was achieved.
Karen Shepard’s achievements as a martial artist, actress, and advocate for female representation in the industry have had a lasting impact on women’s history. Her bravery, determination, and talent have shattered stereotypes and inspired countless individuals to pursue their dreams. Today, she continues to share her knowledge and experiences as a keynote speaker, empowering others to overcome obstacles and reach their full potential.
