Joan Cronan is a trailblazing figure in women’s athletics, known for her extraordinary contributions to the University of Tennessee (UT) athletics program. Born on June 24, 1948, in Opelousas, Louisiana, Cronan’s passion for sports began at a young age. She pursued her love for athletics, excelling in basketball, tennis, and track throughout her high school years.
Cronan’s athletic abilities earned her a scholarship to Louisiana State University (LSU), where she continued to impress. She went on to graduate with a master’s degree from LSU, honing her skills and knowledge of the sports world. In 1968, Cronan’s journey at UT commenced when she joined as a basketball coach. She led the UT basketball team to great success, coming close to winning the first National Women’s College Basketball Championship in 1969.
In 1970, Cronan’s impact expanded when she was appointed as the Athletics Director at UT’s College of Education.
