Biography:
Jen O’Brien, born and raised in Deland, Florida, developed a deep passion for skateboarding and punk rock at an early age. This combination would become the driving force behind her remarkable career as a professional skateboarder and her influential role in the world of action sports and women’s skateboarding.
In her quest to pursue her dreams, Jen moved to Southern California in 1994, immersing herself in the vibrant skateboarding culture. She quickly made a name for herself as a fearless and talented skater, capturing the attention of both her peers and industry professionals.
Jen’s breakout moment came when she became one of the first females ever to skate at the X Games, the prestigious action sports event. Not only did she participate, but she also achieved a remarkable feat by winning a medal. This groundbreaking accomplishment not only cemented her place in skateboarding history but also paved the way for future generations of female skateboarders.
Jen’s achievements continued to accumulate, as she became the first girl to win TransWorld SKATEboarding’s female vert skater of the year award. Her skill, passion, and dedication were recognized and celebrated within the skateboarding community, further solidifying her status as a pioneer in women’s skateboarding.
Another significant milestone in Jen’s career was her participation in the men’s vert doubles event at the X Games alongside her then-husband, Bob Burnquist. By breaking gender barriers and competing alongside male skaters, Jen challenged and ultimately expanded the perception of what women can achieve in action sports.
Beyond her trailblazing career in skateboarding, Jen made an impact beyond the ramps and skateboard parks. She became a vocal advocate for non-GMO foods and an organic lifestyle within action sports after the birth of her daughter, Lotus, in 1999. Her dedication to holistic living was reflected in her partnership with Bob and Damon Way to create the Action Sports Environmental Coalition. This organization aimed to raise environmental awareness within the board sports community and promote sustainable practices.
Jen’s influence extended to shaping the landscape of women’s skateboarding by advocating for equal recognition and opportunities. She played a pivotal role in persuading the X Games to not only include women’s skateboarding but also increase the prize purse from a mere $2,500 to a more respectable $15,000. Additionally, Jen’s efforts led to an expansion in television coverage of women’s skateboarding, amplifying the visibility of female athletes in the sport.
Even today, Jen remains actively involved in the skateboarding community, continuing to skate, surf, and explore new places around the world. Her determination and passion continue to inspire young women and men alike, solidifying her status as one of the most influential female skateboarders of the past two decades.
