Irina Lashko (Russian: Ирина Лашко; born 25 January 1973, in Samara) is a Russian diver who, after her marriage with an Australian, became known as Irina Furler. Lashko competed in four Summer Olympics, representing four countries: the Soviet Union (1988), Unified Team (1992), Russia (1996), and Australia (2004). Throughout her career, Lashko won a total of three Olympic medals – two silver and one bronze.
Irina Evgenievna Lashko was born on January 25, 1973, in Samara, Russia. Samara, formerly known as Kuybyshev during the Soviet era, is situated in the southeastern part of European Russia, at the confluence of the Volga and Samara Rivers. From an early age, Irina showed a passion for diving and began her training at the Sverdlovsk Sports School at the age of ten.
At the young age of 14, Lashko made her mark on the international diving scene. In 1987, she competed in the FINA Diving World Cup and surprised everyone by winning the silver medal in the 3m springboard event, finishing just behind Hall of Famer Gao Min of China. This achievement showcased her potential as a world-class diver and set the stage for her future success.
The following year, 15-year-old Lashko represented the Soviet Union at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. Although narrowly missing the podium in the 3m springboard event, her performance demonstrated her skill and determination on the world stage.
In 1989, Lashko achieved a significant milestone in her career. She defeated Gao Min at the USA International Meet in Orlando, Florida, securing her first international gold medal. This victory signaled her emergence as a formidable competitor in the sport of diving and solidified her status as one of the world’s best.
As the 1992 Barcelona Olympics approached, Gao Min and Lashko were widely acknowledged as the top contenders in the women’s 1m and 3m diving events. However, it was Gao who ultimately claimed the gold, while Lashko captured the silver medal in the 3m event. Despite falling short of the top spot, Lashko’s performance underscored her unwavering pursuit of excellence.
In 1993, Lashko continued to showcase her diving prowess by winning two silver medals at the FINA Cup in Beijing. However, the following year, she took a temporary break from competition to welcome the birth of her daughter, Alina.
Returning to the sport in 1995, Lashko demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination. She secured the World Cup 1m title, solidifying her position as a fierce competitor. At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Lashko once again claimed the silver medal, this time finishing behind Fu Minxia, another future Hall of Famer.
