Biography:
Ihsan El-Kousy (born in 1900) was the first Egyptian Muslim woman to graduate from the American University of Beirut. She played a significant role in promoting women’s education and empowerment in Egypt during the early 20th century.
Ihsan El-Kousy was born in 1900 in Al Qusea, an ancient city in central Egypt near the Nile. During that time, education for girls was not common or encouraged. However, Ihsan’s parents and grandparents were strong advocates for education, and she was raised in an environment surrounded by books. Inspired by their support and her own passion for learning, Ihsan pursued her studies despite societal norms. She earned a graduate degree and later a PhD in the United Kingdom, becoming one of the few highly educated women in Egypt at the time.
In 1924, Ihsan moved to Lebanon and became the first Muslim woman to be accepted into the American University of Beirut (AUB). She not only broke barriers but also became a trailblazer for future generations of women seeking higher education. However, she needed her husband’s approval to continue her education, highlighting the challenges faced by women in asserting their autonomy and pursuing their aspirations during that era.
During her time at AUB, Ihsan faced a language barrier, as her English proficiency was not advanced enough to follow the courses. Undeterred, she began her education as an auditor. However, her dedication and hard work caught the attention of AUB’s president, who encouraged her to apply as a regular enrolled student after the second year. Ihsan successfully passed all her exams in the Education major and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1929.
Upon completing her degree, Ihsan returned to Egypt and was appointed as the principal of the Sanieh Secondary School. She served in this position for one year before becoming headmistress at a primary school in Alexandria for the next three years. Subsequently, she lectured on social subjects, history, civics, and ethics in various secondary schools for a period of eight years.
In 1953, Ihsan’s passion for social work led her to become the Dean of Girls’ Higher Institute for Social Work, an institution of university standards. She actively engaged in various fields of Egyptian life, demonstrating her commitment to making a positive impact on her society. Ihsan also played an integral role in the Women’s Movement, eventually becoming the secretary of the Women’s Union Society. She co-founded organizations such as the Egyptian Feminist Union, Maadi Child Welfare, and Home of Delinquent Children, actively working to improve the lives of Egyptian women and children.
Ihsan El-Kousy’s achievements and activities had a profound impact on numerous spheres of Egyptian society. Through her dedication and perseverance, she opened doors for countless other girls to follow their goals and pursue successful careers. Her pioneering spirit and contributions to women’s education and empowerment continue to inspire generations of women in Egypt and beyond.
