Holly McPeak (born May 15, 1969 in Manhattan Beach, California) is a retired American indoor and beach volleyball player. She is considered one of the most accomplished and successful players in the history of the sport. McPeak was a three-time Olympian in beach volleyball and had an impressive career on the professional circuit, earning numerous titles and accolades.
McPeak’s journey in volleyball began in her hometown of Manhattan Beach. She attended Mira Costa High School, where she quickly made a name for herself as a talented athlete. As a member of the school’s volleyball team, McPeak contributed to two CIF 5-A champion victories. In her junior year in 1985, the Mustangs went undefeated and secured the state championship title with a perfect 29–0 record. A year later, they reached the championship match but fell short of another title. Throughout her high school career, McPeak showcased her determination and dedication to the sport.
College recruiters recognized McPeak’s exceptional skills, despite her shorter stature at 5 feet 7 inches. Volleyball Monthly magazine dubbed her the most coveted setter in the country. McPeak had scholarship offers from prestigious universities such as UCLA and the University of California, Berkeley. Ultimately, she chose to attend UC Berkeley, attracted by the institution’s academic excellence.
McPeak made an immediate impact on the collegiate volleyball scene. In her freshman year at Cal, she was named the Pacific 10 Conference freshman of the year in 1987, showcasing her ability to excel at the highest level of competition. However, her time at Cal was not without challenges. A coaching change after her freshman year disrupted her rhythm, as the new coach struggled to push the team to their fullest potential. This created a source of frustration for the fiercely competitive McPeak.
After her college career, McPeak transitioned to the world of professional beach volleyball. She embarked on a remarkable journey that saw her rise to the top ranks of the sport. Throughout her career, McPeak accumulated an impressive 72 beach volleyball titles, solidifying her status as one of the most successful players in the history of the game. Her career earnings reached a staggering $1.4 million USD, a testament to her skill and dedication.
Although McPeak was considered shorter than many of her competitors, her determination and tenacity made her one of the toughest players to beat on the tour. She defied expectations and consistently outperformed taller opponents with her unrivaled work ethic and skill.
