Holly Rene Holm, born on October 17, 1981, is an American mixed martial artist and former professional boxer. She has competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and is known for her accomplishments in both boxing and MMA. With an impressive career in both sports, Holm has left an indelible mark in combat sports history.
Growing up in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Holm was the youngest of three children. Her father, Roger, was a Church of Christ preacher, earning her the nickname The Preacher’s Daughter. Her mother, Tammy, worked as a massage therapist. Holm comes from a primarily Irish descent.
During her youth, Holm excelled in various athletic endeavors. She participated in soccer, gymnastics, swimming, and diving. But it was her introduction to cardio-kickboxing during aerobics classes at the age of 16 that sparked her journey to becoming a fighter. Recognizing her potential, Holm’s instructor, Mike Winkeljohn, began training her.
In September 2001, Holm made her mark in the world of kickboxing by winning the championship title in the International Rules Adult Women’s Welterweight Division at the International Kickboxing Federation (IKF) USA National Amateur Championship Tournament in Kansas City, Missouri. She emerged victorious in two bouts, one by technical knockout and the other by unanimous decision. This success marked the end of her amateur kickboxing career, leaving her with an impressive record of 6–0–2.
Holm’s talent in combat sports extended beyond kickboxing. She transitioned to professional boxing and achieved remarkable success. Holding several welterweight boxing titles, Holm was highly regarded as one of the best female welterweights worldwide. However, it was her fight at UFC 193 on November 15, 2015, in Melbourne, Australia, that cemented her place in MMA history. In a stunning upset, Holm defeated Ronda Rousey, capturing the bantamweight title and handing Rousey her first ever loss in the sport. This fight, regarded as one of the biggest upsets in combat sports history, catapulted Holm into the spotlight and showcased her remarkable skill and resilience.
