Biography:
Hillary Knight, whose full name is Hilary Atwood Knight, was born on July 12, 1989, in Palo Alto, California. However, she grew up in Lake Forest, Illinois, and later in Hanover, New Hampshire. Knight comes from a family with a strong skiing background and her cousin is the three-time Olympic alpine skier, Chip Knight. Her early years were also shaped by her mother’s decision to enroll Knight and her three younger brothers in hockey after they moved to Illinois.
Knight’s talent and dedication quickly became apparent as she embarked on her playing career. She attended Choate Rosemary Hall for high school, where she played hockey before moving on to college. Knight continued to excel as a forward for the University of Wisconsin–Madison, helping the team achieve remarkable success.
In her first year at Wisconsin, during the 2007-2008 season, Knight made an immediate impact. She ranked second on the team in goals with 20, tied for fifth in assists with 18, and recorded a total of 38 points. Her impressive performance placed her third overall in team scoring and seventh in points per game for rookies. Notably, Knight led the team in game-winning goals with six and garnered attention for her exceptional skills on the ice.
The following year, Knight’s influence grew even stronger as she emerged as a pivotal player on the Wisconsin Badgers team. In the 2008-2009 season, she led the NCAA in both goal scoring, with 45 goals, and total points, with 83 points. Additionally, her 16 power-play goals topped the NCAA rankings. Knight’s outstanding statistics made her the new record-holder for points, goals, and power-play goals in a single season for the Badgers. She consistently demonstrated her ability to perform under pressure, recording 24 multi-point games, 13 multi-goal games, and 11 multi-assist games. Notably, she scored five goals in a single game against the Quinnipiac Bobcats, setting a school record. Knight’s exceptional season culminated in leading her team in scoring during the Frozen Four tournament, tallying six points with three goals and three assists.
Knight’s success continued beyond the collegiate level. She joined the professional ranks, playing for the Les Canadiennes de Montreal in the CWHL and the Boston Pride in the NWHL. With the Boston Pride, Knight was part of the inaugural Isobel Cup-winning team, showcasing her skills and dedication to the game.
However, it is in international competition where Knight’s impact reaches historic levels. As a member of the United States Women’s National Ice Hockey Team, Knight has won numerous accolades and made an indelible mark on women’s hockey.
