Biography:
Gina Alexis Rodriguez is an American actress known for her role as Jane Villanueva in the CW series Jane the Virgin. Born on July 30, 1984, in Chicago, Illinois, Rodriguez began her career in theater productions in 2003 before making her on-screen debut in an episode of Law & Order. Her breakthrough came in 2012 when she starred in the independent musical-drama film Filly Brown.
Raised in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on Chicago’s Northwest Side, Rodriguez is the youngest daughter of Puerto Rican parents, Magali and Gino Rodriguez, who worked as a boxing referee. She has two sisters and an older brother. At the age of seven, Rodriguez demonstrated her talent by performing at the salsa dance company Fantasia Juvenil.
Rodriguez attended St. Ignatius College Prep for high school, where she was two years behind comedian John Mulaney. While focusing on salsa dancing, she decided to pursue acting more seriously at the age of 17. Her dedication and talent earned her a spot amongst thirteen teenagers accepted into Columbia University’s Theatrical Collaboration program. Subsequently, she went on to study at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, training for four years at the Atlantic Theater Company and Experimental Theatre Wing. Rodriguez’s acting skills were showcased in the world premiere of Casa Blue in the UK, where she portrayed Frida Kahlo in the play titled The Last Moments in the Life of Frida Kahlo at the American Stage Theatre. Her performance received critical acclaim, solidifying her place in the industry.
