Galina Nikolayevna Prozumenshchikova was a Soviet breaststroke swimmer who achieved great success at the Olympic Games and European Championships during the 1960s and 1970s. Born on November 26, 1948, in Sevastopol, Russian SFSR, Galina’s achievements in the pool not only brought her personal glory but also made a significant impact on Soviet swimming history.
Galina’s passion for swimming began to develop in 1959 when she joined a local swimming club. Her talent quickly became evident as she won several national and international competitions and broke national and world records in the 200m breaststroke. Although her favorite discipline was the 100m breaststroke, it was not an Olympic event until 1968.
In 1964, Galina made her Olympic debut in Tokyo. However, her preparations were hindered by an appendicitis surgery just before the Games, which affected her performance. Additionally, she faced strong competition from her rival, Svetlana Babanina, who had set a world record in the 100m breaststroke prior to the Olympics. Despite these challenges, Galina managed to win the gold medal in the 200m breaststroke, setting a new Olympic record and becoming the first Soviet Olympic champion in swimming.
Prozumenshchikova continued to showcase her talent and dominance in the pool. In 1966, she enrolled in the Faculty of Journalism at Moscow State University and set her final and fastest record for the 200m breaststroke at 2:40.8, winning a gold medal at the European Aquatics Championships. She also took the silver in the medley event.
At the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, Galina narrowly missed out on the gold medal in the 100m breaststroke, finishing with the silver. She also secured a bronze in the 200m breaststroke. Despite considering retirement, Galina returned to competition in 1970, where she achieved further success. She won gold medals in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke events and added another silver in the medley at the European Aquatics Championships.
Throughout her career, Galina Prozumenshchikova set five world records between 1964 and 1966 in the 200m and 100m breaststroke events. She also won a total of five Olympic medals spanning from 1964 to 1972 and clinched five medals at the European Championships.
