Faina Grigorievna Melnik (Russian: Фаина Григорьевна Мельник, Ukrainian: Фаїна Григорівна Мельник; 9 June 1945 – 16 December 2016) was a leading Soviet discus thrower and a pioneer in women’s track and field. Not only was she an Olympic champion in the discus event, but she also set an astounding 11 world records throughout her career.
Born on June 9, 1945, in Bakota, Khmelnytskyi, Ukraine, Melnik showed early promise in athletics. Her talent, combined with her unwavering determination, led her to become one of the most dominant discus throwers of her era. Melnik’s Jewish heritage only added to her story, as she overcame societal expectations and stereotypes to etch her name in the annals of sports history.
Melnik’s breakthrough came at the 1971 European Athletics Championships, where she represented the Soviet Union.
