Elizabeth Anne Betsey Armstrong, born on January 31, 1983, is an American water polo goalkeeper and a prominent figure in Olympic water polo history. Known for her exceptional skills and contributions to the sport, Armstrong has represented the United States women’s national water polo team in multiple international competitions.
Armstrong’s water polo journey began during her time at Huron High School in Ann Arbor. As a three-year letterwinner on her school’s water polo team, she showcased her talent and passion for the sport. Following her high school years, Armstrong pursued her academic and athletic career at the University of Michigan, where she became the goalkeeper for the women’s water polo team. While studying for her bachelor’s degree in English language and Literature, Armstrong set a record at the University of Michigan with an impressive 350 saves.
In 2006, Armstrong made her debut for the national team, marking the start of her successful international career. At the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics, she played a crucial role in guiding the team to the championship game, where they unfortunately fell short to the Netherlands, earning the silver medal. Armstrong’s exceptional performance as the top goalkeeper of the tournament, with 49 saves, showcased her skill and determination.
Throughout her career, Armstrong continued to shine on the international stage. She won gold medals with the United States in numerous competitions, including the 2012 Summer Olympics, 2007 and 2011 Pan American Games, and 2007 and 2009 world championships. Notably, Armstrong’s 102 saves during the 2012 Summer Olympics solidified her position as one of the leading goalkeepers in Olympic water polo history.
Beyond her accomplishments in the pool, Armstrong has also made significant contributions as a coach. Starting in 2012, she took on the role of assistant coach for the University of Michigan Women’s Water Polo Team, working alongside head coach Matt Anderson to mentor and train the players.
