Cynthia Jane Cindy Brogdon, born on February 25, 1957, is an American former basketball player who competed in the 1976 Summer Olympics. She was born in Buford, Georgia and attended Greater Atlanta Christian School. Brogdon displayed her basketball talents during her time in high school, which eventually led her to a successful collegiate and international career.
Brogdon first attended Mercer University in Georgia in 1976 and 1977, where she showcased her outstanding skills on the basketball court. However, she later transferred to the University of Tennessee, where she continued to excel and make a name for herself as an accomplished athlete.
One of Brogdon’s noteworthy achievements was becoming the first Georgian to play as a member of a United States Olympic Basketball team. This was a significant milestone for both her and her home state, as she paved the way for future athletes to represent Georgia on the international stage. Her contribution to American basketball was recognized when she was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.
In 1976, Brogdon was selected to join the National team that would compete at the Olympic Games held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The tournament’s opening game saw a loss for the USA team against Japan. However, they bounced back and secured victories against Bulgaria and Canada, with Brogdon making pivotal contributions to the team’s success.
One of the most memorable moments of the tournament came when the USA team faced the USSR, a formidable opponent. Although they suffered a loss against the USSR, Brogdon and her teammates needed a victory against Czechoslovakia to secure a medal. With her exceptional skills and determination, Brogdon played a crucial role in leading the team to an 83–67 win and ultimately securing the silver medal.
