Biography:
Christina Jackbin Nanghali Van-Dunem Da Fonsech-Shikongo, known as the Nampol Iron Lady, is a prominent figure in the Namibian Police Force. Born in 1978 in Oshakati, Christina experienced a challenging upbringing, marked by a sense of abandonment and a lack of stability. She was raised by surrogate families and never had the opportunity to know her biological parents, particularly her mother.
Due to her difficult circumstances, Christina dropped out of school in grade nine and began working as a nanny. However, her life took a turn when former Namibian president Sam Nujoma paid education fees for children in similar financial circumstances, including Christina, in 1992. This opportunity allowed her to pursue her dreams and create a better future for herself.
In 2003, shortly after giving birth to her first child, Christina joined the Namibian Police Force. Despite becoming a mother, she was determined to fulfill her goal of serving her country. After completing her police training, she was stationed in the Oshana region. Her commitment and dedication to her work propelled her career, leading to her transfer to the capital city, Windhoek, in 2012.
In Windhoek, Christina assumed the role of chief inspector and headed the regional community affairs office. She became widely known for her involvement in establishing and revamping community policing initiatives, particularly in the Khomas region. Her efforts were instrumental in strengthening the relationship between the police force and the communities they serve, fostering trust and cooperation.
One of Christina’s notable contributions to society has been her role in cracking down on fake pastors and unscrupulous traditional healers. Recognizing the harm caused by individuals taking advantage of vulnerable community members, she led efforts to arrest self-proclaimed traditional doctors and prophets, especially in the informal settlements around Windhoek. With her leadership, the police were able to rescue individuals who were being held against their will by these fraudulent individuals. In one particular incident in 2018, they successfully rescued a young woman who had been held hostage for three years after leaving her job, selling her belongings, and seeking refuge in a church.
Christina Van-Dunem Da Fonsech-Shikongo has made a significant impact in terms of ensuring the safety and well-being of Namibian citizens. Her unwavering commitment to upholding the law, protecting vulnerable individuals, and promoting community engagement has earned her the reputation as the Nampol Iron Lady.
