She also secured the 1000 m World Cup in 1988. Luding-Rothenburger’s dedication and hard work were evident in her consistent performances and numerous wins throughout her career in speed skating.
However, Luding-Rothenburger’s talent was not limited to speed skating alone. In 1980, she decided to take on a new challenge during the off-season, under the guidance of her coach Ernst Luding, whom she would later marry after the 1988 Winter Olympics. Initially, Luding-Rothenburger faced resistance and was advised to stick to skating. Eventually, she was given permission by the president of the East German sports federation to compete internationally in cycling.
Her decision to venture into cycling proved to be a wise one, as she quickly made her mark in the sport. At the 1986 World Cycling Championships, Luding-Rothenburger won the gold medal in the women’s sprint event, showcasing her versatility and athletic prowess. She followed up this victory with a silver medal the following year, solidifying her status as one of the world’s premier track cyclists.
Luding-Rothenburger’s unprecedented success led to recognition and accolades. In October 1986, she was awarded a Star of People’s Friendship in gold (second class) for her outstanding achievements in the sporting world. Her passion and commitment to both speed skating and cycling propelled her to new heights and further solidified her place in sports history.
The pinnacle of Luding-Rothenburger’s career came in 1988 when she achieved an extraordinary accomplishment that remains unmatched to this day. She became the only athlete to win both Summer and Winter Olympic medals in the same year. At the Winter Games in Calgary, Canada, she clinched the gold medal in the 1000 m speed skating event, and added a silver medal in the 500 m. Just seven months later, Luding-Rothenburger won the silver medal in the 1000 m sprint in track cycling at the Summer Games in Seoul, South Korea. Her remarkable achievements cemented her status as a true sporting legend.
After her exceptional performance in the 1988 Olympics, Luding-Rothenburger continued to compete in speed skating, achieving a bronze medal at the 1992 World Sprint Championships.
