Adele Cecilia Ceal Barry, born on April 1, 1955, is an American retired basketball player and coach. She made a significant impact on the world of women’s basketball both as a player and as a coach. Barry’s coaching career spanned over two decades, during which she achieved remarkable success and left a lasting legacy.
Barry was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. She attended Assumption High School in Louisville and graduated in 1973. It was during her high school years that Barry first developed a love for basketball and began to showcase her talent. After high school, she enrolled at the University of Kentucky, where she played at the guard position for four seasons on the Kentucky Wildcats women’s basketball team. Barry’s dedication and skill on the court earned her recognition and admiration from her teammates and coaches.
In 1977, Barry graduated from the University of Kentucky with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. She then started her coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Cincinnati, where she remained until 1979. Barry’s talent for coaching was evident, and she was soon promoted to the position of head coach. Over the next four seasons, she led the team with determination and skill, achieving an impressive 83-42 record.
On April 12, 1983, Barry was appointed as the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes women’s basketball team at the University of Colorado Boulder, replacing Sox Walseth. This marked the beginning of a highly successful coaching tenure that would span more than two decades. Barry brought a new level of excellence to the program, leading the Buffaloes to numerous victories and accolades.
Throughout her 22 seasons at Colorado, Barry amassed an outstanding 427-242 record, firmly establishing herself as one of the most successful coaches in women’s college basketball. She earned four Big Eight Conference Coach of the Year honors, recognizing her remarkable leadership and coaching abilities. In 1995, Barry was honored with the prestigious Carol Eckman Award, further cementing her status as a prominent figure in the sport.
Under Barry’s guidance, the 1988–89 Colorado team achieved a remarkable feat by going undefeated in conference play, becoming the first team in Big Eight history to accomplish this feat. Her teams consistently demonstrated a high level of talent, discipline, and teamwork.
In 2002, Barry achieved another milestone when she became the first woman to coach a Division I basketball program for 20 years at Colorado. Her dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to the game of basketball made a significant impact on the sport and inspired countless athletes and coaches.
Barry’s influence extended beyond the basketball court. She was also an accomplished college athletics administrator. After retiring from coaching in 2005, she served as the associate athletic director and senior woman administrator at the University of Colorado Boulder. In 2013, Barry took on the role of interim athletic director, showcasing her versatility and leadership skills. She continued to make valuable contributions to the athletic department in various positions throughout her career.
In recognition of her exceptional contributions to the world of sports, Barry was deservedly inducted into the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame in 1997.
