Born: 1989 (Mount Vernon, Virginia)
Callie Brownson (born October 15, 1989) is an American football coach and player who is currently the assistant wide receivers coach for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League (NFL). She has made significant strides in breaking barriers for women in football and has been recognized for her skills and contributions to the sport.
Born in Mount Vernon, Virginia, Brownson was raised by her father, Bruce B. Brownson. She attended Mount Vernon High School, where she played softball. However, Brownson’s passion for football was evident from a young age. Despite facing limitations and not being allowed to join the school’s football team, she remained determined to pursue her passion.
While studying at George Mason University, Brownson tried out for the D.C. Divas in the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) at the age of 19. She quickly became an integral part of the team, playing as a free safety and running back. Over the course of eight seasons with the D.C. Divas, Brownson showcased her skills and leadership abilities. She served as a team captain for five seasons and was named an All-American four times, establishing herself as a standout player in the league.
Brownson’s talent and dedication also earned her a spot on the United States women’s national American football team. She represented her country in the IFAF Women’s World Championship in 2013 and 2017, contributing to the team’s success in winning two gold medals.
Following her playing career, Brownson transitioned into coaching. She began her coaching journey as an assistant football coach at her alma mater, Mount Vernon High School, at the age of 21. Her passion for mentoring and sharing her knowledge of the game became evident during her time at the high school level.
In 2017, Brownson had the opportunity to work as a scouting intern for the New York Jets, gaining valuable experience in the professional football realm. Her determination and commitment to learning and growing in the coaching field led to her next opportunity with the Buffalo Bills in 2019, where she worked as a coaching intern.
However, Brownson’s breakthrough moment came in September 2018 when she made history as the first woman hired as a full-time NCAA Division I coach. Dartmouth recognized her talent and dedication and promoted her after she had previously worked as an intern for the team. This milestone not only showcased her capabilities but also served as an inspiration for women aspiring to break into the football coaching industry.
Brownson’s most significant achievement to date came in the NFL. On November 29, 2020, she became the first woman to coach an NFL position group in a regular-season game. Filling in for Cleveland Browns tight ends coach Drew Petzing, she made history and proved that gender should not be a barrier in the coaching world. She continued to break down barriers throughout the 2020-2021 season, filling in for other coaching positions during critical games.
Despite her many achievements, Brownson faced a setback in her personal life. On May 27, 2021, she was arrested in Brunswick, Ohio, for driving 20 miles per hour above the speed limit while under the influence. Her blood alcohol content was over twice the legal limit. Brownson pleaded no contest to a charge of operating a vehicle under the influence and was fined and ordered to attend a driver intervention program. The Cleveland Browns announced that she would face discipline and be suspended from team activities.
Although faced with challenges, Callie Brownson’s story is one of perseverance, talent, and breaking barriers. Her impact extends far beyond her achievements on the football field. She has become a role model and inspiration for young women, proving that with passion, determination, and the drive to succeed, no dream is too big to achieve.
