Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, she made history by becoming the first African woman to serve as an Air Force pilot. Abade’s journey in the Somali Air Force (SAF) began in the mid-1970s when she was selected for pilot training. Showing remarkable skill and determination, she underwent rigorous training programs and demonstrated her aptitude for aviation. Throughout her career in the Somali Air Force, Abade proved herself to be a dedicated and skilled pilot. She excelled in her duties and earned the admiration of her colleagues and superiors. Abade’s presence shattered gender stereotypes and opened the door for other women to pursue careers in aviation and the military.
Unfortunately, Abade’s illustrious career as a pilot came to an abrupt halt with the outbreak of civil war in Somalia in 1992. The devastating conflict crippled the country’s institutions, including the SAF. Despite this setback, Abade’s legacy as the first female pilot in Somalia’s history remains a testament to her pioneering spirit and resilience.
In the years following her military service, Abade made significant contributions as a civil activist. She dedicated herself to promoting peace and reconciliation in her war-torn homeland. In the mid-2000s, she embarked on a peace campaign, advocating for lawmakers to come together and end the long-standing civil conflict in Somalia.
Clad in the colors of the Somali flag, Abade attended every major political function, commanding the respect of all attendees. Her unwavering commitment to peace earned her the nickname Calansida or The Flag-bearer for her instrumental role in the reconciliation process in neighboring Arta, Djibouti. It was through this process that the Transitional Federal Government was established, a crucial step towards stability and peace in Somalia.
Abade’s remarkable journey is a testament to her patriotism and strength. Her military experience shaped her into a resilient and determined woman, empowering her to make a difference in her country’s future.
