Biography:
Enriqueta Medellín, born María Enriqueta Medellín Legorreta on December 10, 1948, in Mexico City, was a prominent Mexican surgeon and environmentalist. From a young age, she demonstrated a deep commitment to the environment and participated in various projects aimed at cleaning up her city. This early exposure sparked her interest in the connection between disease and the environment, which would shape her future endeavors.
Medellín obtained a medical surgeon degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where she specialized in human genetics. Alongside her medical studies, she also pursued education and management in the field of environmental sciences. Her multidisciplinary background allowed her to approach environmental issues from a holistic perspective, integrating her medical knowledge with her passion for preserving the environment.
In 1985, Medellín’s life took a significant turn when she participated in humanitarian aid projects in the aftermath of the devastating Mexico City earthquake. Impacted by the experience, she and her extended family decided to relocate to Aguascalientes City in 1987. There, she continued her work as a surgeon, while also emerging as a prominent figure in the field of environmental activism.
In 1992, Medellín co-founded the association Conciencia Ecológica (Ecological Consciousness) alongside her mother and other dedicated activists. This organization initiated the first recycling project in the state and implemented numerous initiatives aimed at raising awareness about waste management, teaching people about the importance of environmental preservation, and protesting against developments that caused harm to the environment.
Medellín’s environmental advocacy extended beyond the local level. She actively participated in the creation of policies at the state, national, and even international levels, advocating for the protection of ecosystems. Her notable contributions earned her recognition and accolades throughout her career.
In 2006, Medellín became the first recipient of the state prize for Environmental Merit, acknowledging her significant efforts in environmental conservation. Her dedication and impact continued to be celebrated, and in 2012, she was honored with Mexico’s highest distinction for environmentalists, the Premio al Mérito Ecológico (Ecological Merit Award).
Medellín’s contributions did not go unnoticed in the academic community. In 2020, she received the prestigious Biotopo de Oro (Golden Biotope) from the National College of Ecological Doctors. The following year, she was granted the Aguascaliente Prize in the Clear Water category, highlighting her outstanding work in protecting water resources.
Tragically, Enriqueta Medellín passed away on January 6, 2022, leaving behind a powerful legacy as one of the most influential environmental activists in central Mexico. In honor of her contributions, the Queta Medellín Ecological Center was established, renaming the state’s ecological and tree replenishment facility.
Posthumously, the municipality of Aguascalientes created the Enriqueta Medellín Prize as a tribute to her exceptional dedication. This award recognizes individuals and organizations that have made exemplary efforts to improve the community and protect the environment, ensuring Medellín’s impact continues to inspire future generations.
