Biography:
Kayla Jane Barron (née Sax) was born on September 19, 1987, in Pocatello, Idaho. She is an American submarine warfare officer, engineer, and NASA astronaut. Barron’s journey to becoming an astronaut began when she was selected in June 2017 as a member of the NASA Astronaut Group 22. After undergoing rigorous training, she qualified as an astronaut in 2020.
Before joining NASA, Barron had a distinguished military career. She started her journey at the United States Naval Academy, where she graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science degree in systems engineering. During her time at the Naval Academy, she was a member of the Midshipmen cross country and track teams. Following graduation, Barron pursued further education at the University of Cambridge on a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. In 2011, she earned a Master of Philosophy degree in nuclear engineering. Her graduate research focused on modeling the fuel cycle for a next-generation, thorium-fueled nuclear reactor concept known as an accelerator-driven subcritical reactor.
Motivated by her desire to address anthropogenic climate change, Barron embarked on a military career, becoming one of the first women to become submarine warfare officers. She underwent the Navy’s nuclear power and submarine officer training program and was assigned to the Ohio-class submarine USS Maine. As a division officer on the USS Maine, she completed three patrols, showcasing her dedication and expertise in the field. Following her submarine assignment, Barron served as the Flag Aide to the Superintendent at the Naval Academy, gaining invaluable experience and leadership skills.
In June 2017, Barron’s dream of becoming an astronaut became a reality when she was selected as a member of NASA Astronaut Group 22. She embarked on a two-year training program, further enhancing her skills and knowledge for future space missions. Barron’s selection made her the fifth female Naval Academy graduate to become an astronaut candidate, paving the way for future women in the field.
Barron’s first spaceflight, together with the crew of Expedition 66/67, took place on November 10, 2021. She was part of the SpaceX Crew-3 mission and worked as a mission specialist aboard the International Space Station.
Throughout her life, Barron has always thrived in challenging environments. Her accomplishments, academic achievements, and dedication to making a positive impact inspire many.
