From a young age, West excelled in various sports, ultimately becoming an all-state athlete in both volleyball and basketball. Her exceptional talent and drive propelled her to new heights as she went on to become a nationally rated official in four different sports. West’s exceptional skills and sportsmanship caught the attention of many, and she became a role model for aspiring athletes across the nation.
In 1969, while serving as the Director of Athletics for women at Southern Illinois University (SIU), West led her golf team to win the National Golf Championship. This historic victory showcased the remarkable coaching abilities and leadership skills she possessed. That same year, West’s basketball team at SIU placed fifth nationally, further solidifying her reputation as a formidable force in the world of women’s sports.
