Biography:
Born an athlete, Shirley Marshall-Lee earned a place in history when she became the first black female diver in 1965. She grew up with a love for the water, which was fostered by weekly trips to the Blacks-only pools in Washington, DC during the summers. At the age of 16, she became a lifeguard when Alexandria opened its first community pool for African-Americans in 1952.
In 1965, Marshall-Lee crossed paths with Dr. Jose Jones, a founding member of the Underwater Adventure Seekers, the first African-American scuba diving club founded in 1959. Intrigued by the world of diving, she began taking lessons with Dr. Jones and obtained her basic diving certification that year. This momentous achievement made her the first certified Black female diver and the first female member of the Underwater Adventure Seekers.
Marshall-Lee’s passion for diving has taken her to exotic locations around the world. She has explored the mesmerizing underwater landscapes of Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Bermuda, Curaçao, Belize, and Haiti, among others. Over the years, she has logged an impressive number of over 1000 dives, a testament to her dedication and love for the sport.
An accomplished diver, Shirley Marshall-Lee has received numerous accolades and awards throughout her career. In 2009, her outstanding contributions to the diving community were acknowledged when she was inducted into the National Association of Black Scuba Divers Hall of Fame.
