Biography:
Zeina Akar, also known as Zeina Adra, was a prominent Lebanese politician who served as the Defence Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of Lebanon from January 21, 2020, to September 10, 2021. Born in Koura, Akar made history as the first female defence minister in the Arab world. Throughout her career, she played a significant role in shaping the political landscape of Lebanon and advocating for social development and female empowerment.
Akar’s early life was marked by her strong commitment to education and community service. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in marketing and management from the Lebanese American University. In 1998, she co-founded the Social and Cultural Development Association (INMA), a non-governmental organization focused on providing educational, health, and economic services in Kefraya and Lebanon. Her dedication to social development extended to her professional life, as she served as the executive director of the renowned research and consultancy firm Information International, which was founded by her husband.
In January 2020, Zeina Akar was appointed as the Defense Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in Lebanon’s Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Hassan Diab. Her appointment marked a significant milestone for women’s representation in the political sphere, as she was one of six women appointed to the twenty-member Cabinet. Akar’s appointment as the country’s first female defence minister garnered attention and praise, highlighting her exceptional managerial and organizational skills.
Nevertheless, Akar faced criticisms and challenges during her tenure. Although she had no military or defense background, her appointment proved that expertise and experience in the field were not necessarily prerequisites for the job. Some accused her of being affiliated with various political parties; however, sources denied these claims, stating that she had no partisan background and was chosen for her qualifications by President Michel Aoun. The Cabinet, referred to as technocratic, aimed to bring together individuals with diverse expertise to address the pressing challenges faced by Lebanon.
In her capacity as Defense Minister, Akar prioritized fighting corruption and addressing the needs and concerns of the people. She advocated for the people’s right to protest and pressure the government, emphasizing the government’s responsibility to act in their best interests. However, her tenure was cut short following the devastating explosion in Beirut on August 4, 2020. In the wake of the incident, Prime Minister Hassan Diab’s government resigned on August 10, and Akar assumed the role of caretaker of the Ministry until a new government was constituted.
Outside of her political career, Zeina Akar is recognized for her role in promoting cultural heritage and preserving Lebanon’s history. She is of Greek Orthodox faith and is married to Jawad Adra, a Sunni businessman who heads one of the country’s largest research companies. Adra also played a significant role in the establishment of the Nabu Museum, which showcases artifacts primarily from his private collection. The couple’s marriage in Cyprus, where they had a civil ceremony due to the restrictions on interfaith marriages in Lebanon, serves as a testament to their commitment to overcoming obstacles and embracing diversity.
Zeina Akar’s legacy as a trailblazing female politician and advocate for social development and women’s empowerment will be remembered in Lebanon’s history. Her dedication to public service and commitment to addressing the needs of the people exemplify the impact that female leaders can make in society.
