Patrícia Ticha Nunes Penicheiro OIH (September 18, 1974) is a Portuguese sports agent and former basketball player. She played for the Sacramento Monarchs of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) for most of her professional career. Known as one of the best point guards of all time, Penicheiro’s talent and leadership on the court earned her numerous accolades and a well-deserved place in women’s basketball history.
Born and raised in Figueira da Foz, Portugal, Penicheiro began her basketball journey at a young age. She played for professional clubs during her teens before catching the attention of U.S. college recruiters. Penicheiro seized the opportunity to showcase her skills and joined the Old Dominion University Lady Monarchs basketball team.
From 1994 to 1998, Penicheiro represented Old Dominion University with distinction. Her impact on the team was immediate, and she played a crucial role in leading the Lady Monarchs to the 1997 NCAA Championship Game. Recognized for her exceptional performance, Penicheiro was named to the Final Four All-Tournament team that year. Throughout her college career, Penicheiro amassed 1,304 points, becoming one of the highest-scoring players in Old Dominion’s history.
Penicheiro’s exceptional court vision and prowess in creating scoring opportunities for her teammates set her apart as a playmaker. Her ability to distribute the ball and create scoring opportunities enabled her to excel as a point guard. Penicheiro broke records at Old Dominion, finishing her collegiate career as the university’s all-time steal leader with 591 steals. She also ranks second in career assists at Old Dominion, accumulating an impressive 939 assists.
Her outstanding achievements and contributions to the sport did not go unnoticed. Penicheiro received numerous accolades, including being named a two-time Kodak All-American in 1997 and 1998. She also became the second-ever recipient of the prestigious Lifetime/Wade Trophy, becoming the first international player to earn this honor.
After graduating from Old Dominion in 1998 with degrees in communications and interdisciplinary studies, Penicheiro embarked on her professional basketball career. She joined the Sacramento Monarchs in the WNBA and quickly made her mark in the league. Penicheiro’s skillful play and leadership guided the Monarchs to a WNBA Championship in 2005, cementing her legacy as one of the league’s all-time greats.
Throughout her career, Penicheiro was consistently recognized for her excellence on the court. She was selected as a four-time WNBA All-Star and earned three All-WNBA selections.
