Biography:
Sonia Destri Lie, often known simply as Sonia Destri, is a Brazilian dancer and choreographer who has made significant contributions to the world of hip-hop dance. She is the founder of Companhia Urbana de Dança, a renowned hip-hop group that has gained international recognition for its unique style and powerful performances. Born in Rio de Janeiro into an Italian family, Sonia grew up in one of the British suburbs of the city. Encouraged by her sister, she began taking ballet classes at the age of four, where her talent was quickly recognized by her French teacher.
Sonia’s passion for dance led her to pursue formal training in jazz and modern dance while studying psychology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. She dedicated her spare time to honing her skills in these dance forms, eventually receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in dance. With a thirst for knowledge and a desire to explore different dance styles, Sonia traveled to Germany, where she had the opportunity to train with renowned choreographers such as Pina Bausch, Alwin Nikolais, and Twyla Tharp. She also gained valuable experience in theater, television, and film, collaborating with esteemed professionals in the industry.
During her time in Germany, Sonia discovered a deep interest in urban dance, street jazz, and hip-hop. This newfound passion influenced her greatly, both artistically and culturally. Upon her return to Brazil, she established Companhia Urbana de Dança, a dance company that focused on urban dance forms and sought to bridge the gap between marginalized communities and the world of professional dance. Sonia specifically recruited dancers from the poorer suburbs and favelas of Rio de Janeiro, empowering them and giving them a platform to showcase their talents.
As the founder and artistic director of Companhia Urbana de Dança, Sonia has dedicated herself to breaking stereotypes and promoting diversity within the dance community. She has consistently encouraged the participation of dancers from Brazil’s three cultural groups—indigenous, European, and African—regardless of their social background. The company’s powerful performances have captivated audiences around the world, highlighting the raw talent and creativity that exists within these communities.
Over the years, Companhia Urbana de Dança has gained widespread acclaim and has become a symbol of hope and empowerment for marginalized communities. Their performances have been showcased at prestigious international dance festivals and venues, including the Biennale de Lyon in 2006 and the New York City Center in 2010. The group’s 2010 debut in New York City was even ranked among the top 10 dance performances of the year.
In 2013, Companhia Urbana de Dança received government funding for the first time, providing new opportunities and support for the future of the company. This recognition solidified Sonia’s impact on the dance world and reaffirmed her dedication to promoting social change through her art.
