Sofia Goggia, born on November 15, 1992, in Bergamo, Italy, is a highly accomplished Italian alpine skier. She has made a significant impact in various disciplines and is a prominent member of the national team of the Italian Winter Sports Federation.
Goggia’s journey in skiing started at the young age of three in the beautiful Valle di Astino, which is part of the city of Bergamo. She swiftly developed her skills on the slopes of Foppolo and soon began to showcase her talent. In 2008, at just 15 years old, she competed in her first FIS race. Merely eight days later, Goggia made her debut in the European Cup, although she didn’t participate again until December 2009.
The year 2009 proved to be a breakthrough for Goggia as she claimed victories in the slalom, giant slalom, super-G, and combined events at the Italian Junior Championships. She followed this success with solid performances in the 2009 European Youth Olympic Festival in Szczyrk, Poland, finishing 9th in the giant slalom and 15th in the slalom.
In 2010, Goggia made her mark internationally at the Junior World Championships in Haute-Savoie, France. Although she encountered some setbacks, she managed a commendable 6th place finish in the downhill event. However, she didn’t fare as well in the giant slalom, super-G, and slalom events, where she was eliminated. Throughout the season, Goggia secured her first FIS race victories and earned points in the European Cup.
The 2011/2012 season marked a turning point in Goggia’s career. She emerged as a formidable force in the European Cup, consistently achieving top 10 results. On February 8, 2012, she landed on the podium for the first time, finishing third in the Super-G event in Jasná. Delighted with her performance, Goggia went on to secure her first victory in the Super Combined of Sella Nevea just six days later.
Despite a fall in the giant slalom of Andalo on February 24, 2012, which led to knee injuries, Goggia successfully clinched the combined title. She finished third in the overall and super-G classifications, highlighting her remarkable talent on the slopes. Unfortunately, due to her injuries, she was unable to compete in the 2012 Junior World Championships.
