Lieutenant General Sharon Patricia Moffat Nesmith (née Moffat; born 1970) is a senior British Army officer. She has had an illustrious military career and has achieved many notable firsts. Nesmith’s groundbreaking achievements have not only shattered glass ceilings but have also paved the way for future generations of women in the British Army.
Nesmith hails from Northumberland, England. Her father, an officer in the Royal Naval Reserve, and her brother, who served in the British Army for 16 years, likely instilled in her a deep respect and admiration for the military. She pursued her education at the University of Edinburgh, where she studied biological sciences. During her time in university, Nesmith was sponsored by the British Army through a cadetship program.
Her military journey began on September 4, 1988, when Nesmith was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Women’s Royal Army Corps of the British Army. After completing her university studies and training at the prestigious Sandhurst, she joined the Royal Corps of Signals in 1992. Throughout her career, Nesmith served in various locations, including the Balkans, Iraq, and Latvia, gaining invaluable experience and developing her leadership skills.
In August 2014, Nesmith made history by becoming the first woman to command a British Army brigade. She was chosen to lead the 1st Signal Brigade, a role that showcased her exceptional abilities and marked a significant milestone for women in the British Army. Her promotion to brigadier in 2015 further solidified her place in history, as it was the highest position ever held by a woman in the British Army at that time.
Nesmith’s dedication and outstanding service did not go unnoticed. On November 1, 2018, she was appointed Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Her 25 years of remarkable service in the British Army were recognized with the Medal for Long Service and Good Conduct with one clasp.
Continuing to climb the ranks, Nesmith was promoted to major general in March 2019. She assumed the post of Director (Personnel) at Army Headquarters and became a member of the Army Board. Her expertise and leadership were further acknowledged when she was appointed Colonel Commandant of the Royal Corps of Signals in August 2019, and subsequently as Master of Signals in October 2020.
In January 2021, Nesmith made history once again by becoming the first woman to command a British division-level formation. Her appointment as General Officer Commanding of Army Recruiting and Initial Training Command showcased her exceptional leadership skills and broke yet another barrier for women in the British Army.
On August 2022, Nesmith was appointed Deputy Chief of the General Staff, continuing to make waves in her military career and inspire future generations of women in the British Army.
