Ren Changxia (Chinese: 任长霞; pinyin: Rén Chángxiá; February 8, 1964 – April 14, 2004) was a Chinese policewoman who left a lasting impact on the field of law enforcement in China. Known for her fearless dedication and commitment to serving her community, Ren Changxia rose through the ranks to become the first female police chief in the province of Henan.
Ren Changxia began her career in law enforcement in Zhengzhou, where she quickly distinguished herself as an exceptional officer. Her tireless work ethic and unwavering sense of justice earned her the respect and admiration of her colleagues and superiors. Her dedication to the principles of fairness and equality set her apart, even in a predominantly male-dominated profession.
In 2001, Ren Changxia was appointed as the director and party secretary of the party committee of Dengfeng Public Security Bureau, making her the first female police chief in Henan. This historic appointment marked a significant milestone for women in law enforcement in China. Ren approached her new role with determination, aiming to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the department while addressing the issues affecting the local community.
During her three years in Dengfeng, Ren Changxia initiated and implemented a series of successful reforms within her department. She focused on dismantling local criminal syndicates that had ties with corrupt government officials, effectively combating organized crime and promoting a safer environment for the residents. Ren also prioritized assisting poorer communities, effectively bridging the gap between law enforcement and society.
One of Ren Changxia’s notable achievements was her commitment to accessibility and public engagement. Despite her demanding role, Ren would personally receive over 3,400 complainants, listening to their concerns and ensuring that justice was served. Her dedication to the people she served made her a respected figure and a symbol of hope and inspiration.
Tragically, Ren Changxia’s life was cut short on the night of April 14, 2004, in a purported car accident on Expressway S85 from Zhengzhou to Dengfeng. While Ren was in the back seat and her chauffeur remained unharmed, some locals speculate that she was actually assassinated by corrupt government officials or criminal syndicates. Regardless of the circumstances surrounding her death, Ren’s passing was mourned by over 200,000 Dengfeng citizens who poured onto the streets, paying tribute to her indelible impact on their lives.
Ren Changxia’s influence extended beyond her local community. Recognizing her immense contributions and the widespread admiration she garnered, then General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Hu Jintao, premier of the State Council Wen Jiabao, and secretary of the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission Luo Gan called for a national propaganda campaign for cadres to study from her. Ren’s legacy became a guiding force for future law enforcement officers and a symbol of the power of perseverance and integrity.
