Biography:
Prudence Mabhena is a Zimbabwean singer who has faced extraordinary challenges throughout her life. Born with Arthrogryposis, a condition that severely limits muscle movement and joint flexibility, she was also burdened by the social stigma associated with disabilities in her society, which often labeled them as signs of witchcraft. As a result, she was tragically abandoned by her family at a young age.
Fortunately, Prudence found solace and love from her maternal grandmother, who cared for her and sang to her while working on the family farm. Despite her physical limitations, Prudence’s passion for music and performing began to flourish during her time at the King George VI School for the disabled in Bulawayo.
It was at the school that Prudence founded the band Liyana, composed of seven other disabled students who shared a common dream of breaking stereotypes and inspiring those who once saw them as a curse. The band members included Tapiwa Nyengera, a back-up singer and keyboardist who has spina bifida; Energy Maburutse, the first marimba player and back-up vocalist who suffers from osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone syndrome); Honest Mupatse, a tenor marimba player with hemophilia; Marvelous Mbulo, a back-up singer with muscular dystrophy; Vusani Vuma, a hearing-impaired bass marimba player; Goodwell Nzou, a traditional drums and percussionist who lost a leg; and Farai Mabhande, the band’s lead keyboardist who also has arthrogryposis like Prudence.
Together, Liyana aimed to challenge society’s perceptions of disability and showcase their immense musical talents. Their powerful performances not only captivated audiences but also shed light on the strength, resilience, and artistic abilities of the disabled community.
Prudence’s inspiring story caught the attention of filmmakers, leading to the creation of the documentary film Music by Prudence. The film beautifully captures Prudence’s journey and the impact she and her band had on others. It not only brought awareness to the challenges faced by people with disabilities but also won critical acclaim.
At the 82nd Academy Awards, Music by Prudence won the prestigious Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject), further amplifying Prudence’s voice and story on a global stage. The film also received several other awards, including the Audience Award for Best Documentary Short at the Florida Film Festival, Best Short at the Africa World Documentary Film Festival, and Best Short at the DocuWest Film Festival.
Prudence’s dedication and musical talent continue to inspire others. In addition to her musical achievements, she received the 2018 Henry Viscardi Achievement Awards, an honor bestowed upon leaders in the disability sector. Prudence’s resilience, determination, and commitment to breaking down barriers have left an indelible mark on society and serve as a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit.
