Petchara’s career took off when she landed her first film and starring role in Banthuk Rak Pimchawee (Love Diary of Pimchawee) in 1961. In this timeless love story, she shared the screen with the popular leading man, Mitr Chaibancha. Their on-screen chemistry proved to be a hit, and they went on to star together in over 150 films. One of their most beloved collaborations was the 1970s musical masterpiece, Monrak luk thung (Magical Love of the Countryside), which beautifully portrayed and celebrated Thai rural life.
In 1964, Petchara’s exceptional talent was recognized when she was named Best Actress by the Thailand National Film Awards committee for her role in Nok Noi. Her remarkable performance earned her the prestigious award, which she received from King Bhumibol himself, highlighting her immense contribution to Thai cinema.
Tragedy struck the industry in 1970 when Mitr Chaibancha’s accidental death on the set of Insee tong left a void in Petchara’s life. Undeterred, she continued to grace the silver screen, showcasing her versatile acting skills. In 1971, she starred in the musical comedy Ai Tui (Mr. Tui) alongside actor Sombat Metanee, who rose to fame after Mitr’s untimely passing.
Petchara’s final film came in 1979 with Ai Khuntong. Throughout her illustrious career, she captivated audiences with her talent, beauty, and charismatic presence. However, as the years went by, her public appearances became increasingly rare, attributed to her near blindness, likely caused by the intense hours spent under the bright lights on film sets.
Beyond her remarkable contributions to the Thai film industry, Petchara’s influence extends to contemporary art forms. In 2004, performance artist Michael Shaowanasai co-directed and starred in the film The Adventure of Iron Pussy. The film was co-directed by acclaimed filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul, further solidifying Petchara’s cultural impact.
In 2005, Petchara became the focal point of yet another artistic homage. Comedian-actor Petchtai Wongkamlao directed the musical-comedy film Yam Yasothon (Hello Yasothon), which transported viewers back to the vibrant spirit of the Mitr-Petchara era. This film captured the essence of the 1960s and celebrated the colorful era in Thai cinema that Petchara helped define.
