Biography:
Milena Duchková was born on April 25, 1952, in Prague. She is a renowned Czech diver who excelled in her sport and left an indelible mark on the international diving scene. Duchková’s illustrious career spanned more than a decade and earned her numerous accolades and medals.
At the young age of 12, Duchková discovered her passion for diving and began training diligently. Her dedication and talent soon paid off when she competed in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. Against all odds, given the political climate in Czechoslovakia at the time, she was granted permission to participate in the prestigious event. Standing at just 5′ 2 1/2 tall, Duchková defied expectations and emerged as the gold medalist in Platform Diving, becoming Czechoslovakia’s first-ever Olympic medalist in any aquatic sport. Her remarkable achievement also made her the first female tower diver from any country to score over 100 points in the Olympics.
In 1970, Duchková added to her growing list of accomplishments by securing a gold medal in the European Championships. She continued to showcase her exceptional skills, winning gold again in the European Cup in 1967 and 1971. Her prowess in the sport was further demonstrated by her silver medal in the 1972 Olympics and a silver in the World Championships in 1973.
Outside of her diving career, Duchková pursued other endeavors. She exhibited her intellectual prowess by earning a medical degree, specializing in dentistry and oral surgery. Her aspirations extended beyond the diving platform, as she intended to open her own practice in Newfoundland, Canada, where she applied for permanent residency with her husband and young daughter in 1980. The family sought to escape the political climate in Czechoslovakia and provide a better future for their child.
Throughout her career, Duchková’s dedication and determination inspired and motivated those around her. She epitomized the spirit of perseverance, having to navigate the challenges of training under the watchful eyes of Soviet guards during a time when her country was occupied. Despite a setback due to shoulder surgery just eight weeks before the 1976 Olympics, Duchková showcased her resilience and returned to compete in the Games.
Duchková’s contributions to the field of diving extended beyond her individual achievements. She became a member of the Czech Olympic Committee and served as the official medical doctor for the Czech diving team from 1978 to 1979. Her expertise and knowledge were invaluable to her fellow athletes and the sport as a whole. In addition, Duchková embarked on a coaching career, initially in Prague from 1978 to 1980, before moving to Canada to become the head diving coach for the Newfoundland diving team. She also acted as a coach and consultant to the Canadian National diving team, further solidifying her impact on the sport.
